Getting a first job (or a better one) often feels like a catch-22: employers want experience, and you need a job to get it. Volunteering is one of the few ways to break that loop — real skills, real confidence, and something solid to put on a CV — while doing something useful for other people.

It is just as valuable if you are at the other end of a career, with spare time and a lifetime of experience that deserves an outlet. Volunteering gives that experience somewhere useful to go — and the club is better for it.

And at the same time: we need volunteers. Everything Peterborough Lions does is voluntary work. The more hands we have, the more we can achieve for people and organisations in Peterborough and beyond.

That is a genuine win–win. You grow or give back; the community benefits. Whether you eventually join as a Lion or simply help as a supporter of the club, you are supporting the community either way.

What you can gain

Volunteering here is unpaid, but it is not empty time. If you want to practise and demonstrate skills employers recognise, you can — for example:

  • Media, reporting, or marketing — treat club activity as a living case study; help tell the story of our projects (including keeping Facebook and Instagram more up to date — we do not have endless capacity for that, and it is exactly the sort of help we could use)
  • Finance — get involved with club accounts and the practical side of charitable fundraising
  • Organising and management — help plan and run events, from fundraising nights to service projects
  • Hands-on, public-facing work — collections, deliveries, Santa Helper evenings, and other projects you can see on What we do

It is also absolutely fine to arrive with no ambition to climb a career ladder or take on any of the above. If you simply want to lend a hand to others, that is enough — and often exactly what we need most.

Volunteering is good for wellbeing too: purpose, people to work alongside, and a reason to get out and be part of something. That matters at any age — including after the kids have left home, when the house is quieter and the week has more space in it. Company and a shared goal can make a real difference without you needing a grand plan.

If you already have a lifetime of skills and spare time, bring those. An outlet for experience matters as much as a route into experience. Tell us in the form below what you would like to practise, offer, or simply help with.

There is no obligation to take part. Read this page, decide whether it feels right for you, and only then take a next step. Registering interest is a way to start a conversation — not a promise that you will turn up every week, join the club, or commit before you are ready.

How much time you can offer is up to you, and it may change. That is fine.

  2. Help as a supporter — lend a hand on projects or events without joining as a member (yet). Seasonal helpers, one-off evenings, and behind-the-scenes roles all count.
  3. Interested, but not right now — stay on our radar for when the timing is better.
  4. Unsure — just wanted to say hello — no decision yet; we are happy to chat about what volunteering involves.
