Feed the 5000

Feed the 5000 is a free community feast run by Lions District 105CE — Peterborough Lions Club’s own district. The idea comes from Feedback’s Feeding the 5000 campaign: a meal for the public made entirely from good food that was heading for waste.

How a day works

Produce comes from two places. Supermarkets pass on food they cannot sell, and fruit and vegetables are gleaned from fields with the farmers’ approval. On the day it is set out on market-style stalls and given away, reusable carrier bags included. Once people have filled a bag they can have a free hot meal from the same surplus — typically a mild vegetable curry, a samosa, or a vegetable burger.

Clubs from across the district staff the stalls and the kitchen. The event is not fixed to one town. Previous feasts include:

  • Leicester — Saturday 22 September 2018
  • Colchester — Saturday 13 November 2021
  • Lincoln — Saturday 5 November 2022
  • Norwich — Saturday 11 October 2026

The district’s own account of the project is on the 105CE hunger page.

Norwich, 11 October 2026

The latest feast was on Millennium Plain in front of The Forum in Norwich. Several Peterborough Lions were among the volunteers. Our news note from the day covers who was there and what the organisers reported afterwards.
