Ukrainian Meal (19th May 2023)

We’re all aware of the war in Ukraine, and have seen the devastating impacts on the news. For many of us Ukraine wasn’t a country we’d given much thought to until a little over a year ago, yet now it feels so close.

Ukraine is one of over 200 countries worldwide to have Lions clubs, and through the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) we at Peterborough Lions Club have already made donations in support of those on the ground in Ukraine. But we wanted to do more.

So, on Friday 19th May, helped enormously by the wonderful Ivan at Pierogarnia, who will be providing the food, we are offering a three-course Ukranian meal to raise additional funds. These will be split between the Ukranian Catholic Church in Woodston, who have been very active in supporting those impacted by the war, and LCIF, to provide further funds on the ground through Lions.

We are incredibly grateful to Abbie and everyone at The Grange, Netherton, who are hosting this event for us. The cost per person is £30, and because of the generous support from both Abbie and Ivan, £10 from each meal will go to this great cause.

So what can you expect to eat? If Ukrainian food is new to you, don’t worry, we haven’t picked anything too exotic:

Starter:

  • Beetroot soup (v)
  • Mushroom Soup (v)

Main Course

  • Cabbage rolls – cabbage leaves stuffed with pork (vegetarian option available)
  • Dumplings – a mixture of Ukranian (soft cheese) and pork dumplings (vegetarian option available). Forget the suet dumplings you may be familiar with in British casseroles, these stuffed moon-shaped parcels are more like Japanese Gyoza or Italian Gnochi.

Please do join us in trying this amazing food. We’ve had a lot of fun at Pierogarnia creating this menu (we can thoroughly recommend a visit if you’ve never been, and takeaways and deliveries are available too).

And as always with Lions, because we’re all unpaid volunteers, and because our Club running costs are covered through member dues, every penny we raise gets put to good use.

Location

The event will be held at The Grange, adjacent to Netherton Football Club. There is plenty of parking at The Grange, and the bar will be open from 7pm, with food served from around 7:30pm.

For the unadventurous

We have put a lot of effort into choosing a menu that will gently introduce you to Ukrainian/Polish food. If you have more adventurous tastes then a visit to the restaurant is recommended, but we’ve assumed that most of those who come to this event won’t be looking to step far outside their familiar comfort zone. The dishes may be unfamiliar, but the ingredients won’t be!

Nevertheless, there will be some people who want to attend to support the fundraising (maybe coming with other people who want to try something new) but won’t be comfortable with our chosen menu. If this is you, get in touch and we’ll see what we can do. Obviously, we don’t want to host a Ukrainian Meal event and have most of the people eating something else, but at the same time, we don’t want to exclude families with one fussy eater (and maybe they’ll be tempted to try something on the night).

Order

Sorry but this event is now closed to new orders
