It’s that time of year again, where we celebrate Easter with chocolate eggs, and (optionally) a bit of a pub crawl, all for the good of local causes!
Once again we’ve “hidden” (see map!!) giant chocolate eggs in pubs* and other locations around Peterborough. This time, though, they’re Thorton’s eggs. Does that whet your appetite? The read on!
If you find one (typically on the bar or somewhere obvious), all you need to do is pick a box on the grid held in each pub (and other location), make a modest donation to great causes, and wait to see if you win. (Whether you trek on to the next location or stay put is up to you!)

Sometimes helping a charity means finding a poor volunteer standing in cold rain, shaking a bucket (the shaking being a natural response to the cold). But sometimes we make it easy. (No volunteers were made to suffer in the making of this fund raising campaign!)
Each egg is accompanied by a fluffy toy as second prize. Parents are free to choose whether the egg or the toy should be shared with their kids, though!

At our February club business meeting we were fortunate to have District Governor Lion Mandy Hawksley visiting us, and she was happy to carry out the winners draw with the help of other visitors and club members.

Our famous LIONS QUIZ SHEETS 2018/19 edition, will be available, bang on time, from the 1st of September 2018.
Where to get it
Lions volunteers can often be found at supermarkets and other locations selling the quiz, and they are also on sale from other shops and locations. We are heavily dependent on the support of supermarkets and other local businesses and charities for their help selling the quiz (with charities retaining 50% of the sale value towards their own fundraising efforts).
The 2018/19 Quiz will be available to purchase from the 1st of September 2018; click on ‘Quiz Sheets’ in the menu for locations where they can be purchased and collected. Any local business that would be interested in helping us sell the quiz should contact us – we really would love to hear from you!
If you can’t get to one of the locations in person, then don’t worry because for a postage and handling fee of £1 (no matter how many you order) you can buy them online. Or, if you prefer, you can send a large stamped addressed envelope with a cheque for £1.50 for per quiz sheet to:

On Sunday, 5th August 2018, members of Peterborough Lions Club took fun and games, including our ‘Unlock the Lion’s Cage’ game, to the Itter Park fun day. Always, it seems, very well attended the glorious weather once again brought out the crowds.
The games netted a return of £110.40 for Lions’ funds, all of which will be used to support charities and good causes. The President’s thanks go to those Lions that braved the heat to run the stall and help to set it up and take it down.
At their regular monthly meeting, held at Ebenezers Social Club on Tuesday 12th June 2018, Peterborough Lions Club ‘badged up’ four new members. These included Chris Ash, His Worship the Mayor of Peterborough, which postholder is traditionally invited to join at the first convenient meeting following Mayor Making.
The other new members were Kathy Hughes, Peter Heywood, and Suzanne Roberts. A former member, Ann Hewlett, also attended with a view to re-joining in the near future.
In addition to regular business the meeting also heard an informative presentation by Neil Barker of Macmillan Cancer Support Services, highlighting their role in the chain of cancer research and care in the community.
On Saturday 9th June 2018 Peterborough Lions Club hosted a pub-style quiz at Eye community centre. Lions Kevin Rodgers and Jane McLean did a Trojan job of compiling the questions, with a ‘match the quotations to the famous people’ picture round testing most people.
A lovely fish-and-chip supper was provided by Fryz of Bretton, who also donated a £25 voucher as a raffle prize, for which many thanks. www.fryz.co.uk
The evening raised a net £315.39 for Lions funds, all of which will be used to support local charities and worthy causes. It is hoped to hold another, similar, quiz before Christmas so if you fancy a fun evening out watch this space!

If you got them all right, then well done, and if you sent them back to us for the chance to win a prize then you’re part of a small crowd: we had lots sent back to us this year and unusually few that were 100% correct. So if you finished yours and didn’t return it thinking you stood no chance of winning then shame on you!

Last year, Peterborough Lions were pleased to support the Raleigh International and International Citizen Service (ICS) in enabling young people from the UK to travel to Nicaragua, Nepal and Tanzania, to work with other young people locally on projects aimed at helping young entrepreneurs to set up small businesses within their communities, bringing benefits to themselves and those around them.
Volunteer Team Leader, Tom Hudson, travelled out to Wascasoni in northern Nicaragua in May, along with another team leader and 11 volunteers to work with over 50 local young entrepreneurs from 4 nearby communities, with the aim of creating sustainable businesses.
Having returned to the UK, Tom came to our January business meeting to give us a presentation showing their achievements. Over 500 community members were reached through their activities, 11 businesses were set up with seed funding (all of which are still going).

The Peterborough Lions Club CAROL FLOAT, with Santa and his elves, is out and about! You may have seen it at SAINSBURYS at Bretton on the 8th and 9th of December.
It will be at MORRISONS’ at CARDEA/STANGROUND N. on Sat. 16th December, and at MORRISONS’ on LINCOLN ROAD on the 23rd and 24th December.
Our sincerest thanks go out to the above businesses for allowing us to collect funds which are used for mainly local good causes. ALL monies collected from the public, net only of actual direct costs, go into charitable causes. We raise our administration costs by holding social fund raisers within the club and through annual subscriptions.
