On 7th April, 1970, Peterborough Lions Club was chartered; today is our birthday!
For the five decades since then, we’ve served our community through good times and bad. Now, in the midst of a national lockdown forced on us by an invisible virus, we’re holding virtual meetings so that we can esnure that the good work carries on.
So raise a glass, eat some cake if you have some, and here’s to the next fifty!
Thank you to everyone who has played a part in the past 50 years, and to those we’ll meet in the next fifty.
It seems so very long ago that the 2019/20 “Fifty Fifty” quiz first started to take shape, then went to the printers, before going on sale and heading off around the country. It even seems a long time since the deadline for completed quizzes passed (it’s actually only a month). Since then we’ve been busy marking and checking your alternative answers to see if we could add them to our final list.
And finally, that left us with a handful of completely correct sheets from which to draw winners, and that prize draw happened last night at the Club’s February business meeting.
Feedback on the whole has been that this year’s was on the tough side. We’ll endeavour to re-balance things in time for the next quiz, due out in September. (For more information, see the answer sheet.)

Peterborough Lion President Kevin Rodgers, accompanied by Lion Andrew Wilcox, were pleased to attend a meeting of the 4th Peterborough Boys Brigade to present a cheque for the purchase of a pool table for use by the children who attend the Brookside Youth Club, where the Boys Brigade hold their meetings.
This is part of Lion Kevin’s President’s Project for 2019/20, supporting youth projects around Peterborough.

Peterborough Lions Club, with the support of our great friend Santa Claus, and our very own Lennie the Lion, were delighted to be able to make a special visit to the Children’s Ward at Peterborough City Hospital.
In a dramatic entrance, Santa arrived in a motorcade of 7 police cars and a fire engine, complete with sirens and blue lights (competing with Santa’s own multi-coloured lights) to announce his arrival.
The children in the ward waved excitedly at us (or maybe it was just at Santa, who always steals the show?) and it was great for us to be able to bring a smile to some faces in the run up to Christmas. It’s a reminder that whilst some children won’t be lucky enough to be at home for Christmas, Santa always knows where to find them.
Thank you to Peterborough Lions Past President Bill for arranging this visit, and for all those Lions and others involved in making it happen.
Yes, the day has finally come; Peterborough Lions Quiz Sheets are now officially available for sale.
Peterborough Lions Fifty-Fifty Quiz
This year Peterborough Lions Club reaches the ripe old age of 50, and so our topic this year, “Fifty-Fifty” celebrates the people (and business, events, etc) who share this milestone, as well as anything relating to the number 50 itself.
This year, our primary projects are replacing our community minibus and supporting local youth projects.
For now the easiest way to guarantee getting one is via our web shop, but over coming days they will start to be available from local shops and businesses too, and a list will be made available on our website.
Anyone who would like to help us sell them is invited to contact us, whether to sell them to raise money directly for us, or on a shared “50:50” basis where half of the sale proceeds go to another great cause that you wish to support. Over £90,000 has been raised this way in past years.
Our annual quiz sheets go on sale on 1st September, and we’ve just got them back from the printers so we’re ready and raring to go!
We’ll be telling you the topic, and the reason for it, very soon now. But in the meantime we thought we’d share some of the process behind getting the quiz sheets ready each year, by answering some of the questions we’re often asked.
Update: The community minibus has now been replaced! See community minibus page As many of you will know, during 2019 we sadly lost our community minibus to an accident and were striving hard to replace it as soon as possible.

A bit short notice we appreciate but THE WOOLPACK STANGROUND are holding an all day MOTOWN music event on Saturday this week (the 27th July) with proceeds to come to Peterborough Lions Club. Whether you are already a regular or just fancy checking out a pub new to you both Meri, the landlady, and Peterborough Lions Club will be most grateful for your support.
Meri used to run The Heron in Stanground, before the freeholders sold it off for housing. She took over The Woolpack on the departure of the previous landlord and has invested a great deal of effort in bringing it up to scratch. There is a lovely Beer Garden which runs down to the river, and food is on offer; why not go for Sunday lunch if you can’t make Saturday.
Our annual Showtime is three days of fantastic entertainment at the Parkway Sports and Social Club, provided free of charge by Peterborough Lions to senior citizens and other sheltered housing residents.
Thankfully the talents at Westwood Musical Society provide the entertainment and we are mostly relegated to the kitchen to make the tea!
It was another great success and we look forward to being back next year. Thank you to Lion Gaby Sharman and her team for organising it, to everyone who helped on the night, and to everyone who helped us raise money over the past year to fund projects like this.
Peterborough Lion President Richard Willis chose for his President’s Project to raise money for public access defibrillators for the Peterborough area.
The first of these is now installed and operational outside the main entrance to the Town Hall (on the wall outside the Light Box cafe and bar). This will make it accessible to a popular and busy area of the town centre at all hours.
The second is in the porch at Kingfisher Court, Stanground, where it will be available should it be needed for Kingfisher Court residents or anyone else in the local area.
The purpose of these public access defibrillators is to provide 24 hour access to life saving equipment. Should they be needed, following a 999 call for an ambulance the access code for the cabinet can be issued and guidance given on their use. Additionally, staff at local businesses in town and at Kingfisher Court will be provided with training (again funded as part of Lion Richard’s project). This training is extended to members of the public with a specific need (such as a relative or neighbour at high risk of cardiac arrest). The available places are limited, please contact Lion Richard for further information.
