How did you get on with our “Tom, Dick and Harry (Pat and Den Too)” quiz?

If you got them all right, then well done, and if you sent them back to us for the chance to win a prize then you’re part of a small crowd: we had lots sent back to us this year and unusually few that were 100% correct. So if you finished yours and didn’t return it thinking you stood no chance of winning then shame on you!

The winners were drawn at our February Business Meeting, and here they are:

  1. B Stone, Crawley (wins £100)
  2. E Dickenson, Dereham (wins £75)
  3. C Hutchcraft, Warboys (wins £50)
  4. N Mead, Orton Wistow (wins £25)
  5. P Taylor, Walton (wins £10)
  6. L Porter, Tring (wins £10)
  7. P Jeffrey, Ancaster (wins £10)
  8. A Towler, Wisbech (wins £10)
  9. L Johnson, Newborough (wins £10)
  10. J Burton, Uttoxeter (wins £10)

(If you were lucky enough to win, and doubly lucky enough to live locally, then we can recommend spending some of your winnings on a chance to win some chocolate!)

Peterborough Lions Quiz 2017/18The famous PETERBOROUGH LIONS QUIZ SHEETS are now in and coming to a venue near you SOON! Look out for our sellers in your local supermarket in the coming weeks. They may also be available through other smaller outlets and our 50/50 partners, other approved worthwhile charities with which we share the proceeds on a, you guessed it, 50/50 basis. This gives direct support to such charities while still topping up our funds to support other community needs.

If you have never purchased one before these are a very popular item. They can be done individually or as a family or other group (at least one regular supporter keeps them to do after lunch on Christmas Day!). Once you’ve answered as many questions as you can, you can send in your completed sheet(s) which will go into a handsome prize draw!

This year’s topic is “Tom, Dick & Harry (Pat & Den Too)”. That is, 100 questions where all the answers include one of those names lurking within them.

To see where they’re on sale locally, take a look here – if you want to be added to this list please get in touch!

If you can’t find a local seller, you can also buy them directly from this website!

It’s that time of the year again!

Thank you to everyone who purchased quiz leaflets this year – your support is incredibly important to us and we are extremely grateful to everyone who joined in, whether or not you returned the quiz to us for entry into the prize draw.

Please do come along and say hello, and buy a quiz leaflet (or two!). For any organised shoppers planning a month ahead they make great stocking fillers, and we really appreciate all your support. A huge thank you also goes to Sainsbury’s for allowing us to use them as venues.

It can’t really be that time again already, can it?

But yes, it is – the Peterborough Lions 2016 Quiz Sheets are now on sale! A highlight of the year for many people, and an chance to bang heads against the wall in frustration for others, it’s always a fantastic opportunity to test those brain cells and help us raise money for fantastic causes.

As usual you’ll be able to pick up a copy from one of several local shops and charities (if you’d like to support us by selling the quiz please get in touch), or directly from us in person at one of several locations throughout the city over the next couple of months, particular when we’re out with the Carol Float nearer to Christmas – our diary will have locations and dates when they’re available. You can also buy them online (£1 postage charge applies no matter how many you buy, and we still have some from previous years available if you missed them).

For 2016 we’re “Out and About in the U.K.” for our theme, with answers relating to places to visit and events to see around the United Kingdom. A sample to get you started: do you know which is the largest gothic cathedral in England? (Two word answer, 4 and 7 letters respectively.) I’ll be honest – I didn’t know the answer, but I do now as that sample is already filled in for you, so if you’re stuck you can always buy the quiz just to find out!

This year the theme is “What’s My Line? (Careering around the world of work)”, so if you know your accountants from your bookkeepers you should have an advantage – but if you don’t, not to worry because as always the connection to the topic is pretty loose, and as usual it’s all a bit of fun. To get you started, try a sample question: “Mail male” (answer is 7 letters).

The price is unchanged from the last few years at £1.50, and you can win prizes of up to £100!

For those of us who have been around a while this might not come as a surprise, but can you believe that the Peterborough Lions Quiz has been going over 25 years?

So that’s it for the 2014 quiz! Take the next six months off to relax and prepare yourself for the 2015 quiz, available from September.

The Signature Annual Awards, a national charity, honour the ground-breaking work that is being carried out across the UK and Ireland to improve access for deaf and deafblind people.

The awards ceremony will take place on 10 October at Durham Cathedral. Voting for this outstanding couple is open until 2 October 2014 at 12 noon via the Signature Annual Awards website http://signatureannualawards.org.uk/you-decide

John Cheetham, a life member of Peterborough Lions Club and his wife Sheila who is also a Lion, have been successful in being short-listed for the UK and Ireland Community Spirit Award. They were nominated by the teachers of deaf children at Jack Hunt School. Sheila and John have made a positive impact across the deaf community for more than three decades. Their tireless dedication to removing barriers and developing awareness has had a huge impact on the lives of deaf children and young people and their families locally, nationally and internationally.

Sheila has been deaf for 30 years, she lost the hearing in one ear when she was a child, but was not diagnosed until her teenage years. She has used her own experience to support others both personally and through raising funds for charity. Her attitude and commitment has inspired her husband John to equally devote his time and efforts to improving the lives of deaf people and their families. They have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charities such as Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and Peterborough and District Deaf Children’s society (PDDCS). They also devised the highly successful and popular annual Peterborough Lions Quiz.

Sheila and John recognise the importance of not only supporting deaf people but of supporting their families too. They have helped many families adjust to the challenges of raising a child with a hearing loss. They are active supporters of PDDCS, of which John has been president for over 25 years. More recently Sheila and John saw the successful conclusion to a campaign to bring Music and the Deaf to the local area. John has covered hundreds of miles in the Lions minibus to enable children to pursue and develop their musical talents. They have access to one to one tuition, play in an orchestra and recently met Evelyn Glennie. In 2013 Music and the Deaf was the nominated charity of the Peterborough Lions.

Together, Sheila and John have delivered training in Deaf Awareness and face reading to organisations nationwide in their role as Speech and Hearing Officers for the Lions Club International. They also created the “I see what you’re saying” badge. Now retired from work, Sheila and John continue their hard work to promote a positive attitude towards deafness. With their warm personalities they make others feel that anything is possible.
