Peterborough Lions Race Night

race nightPeterborough Lions are excited to invite you to our 2016 Race Night, at 7:30pm on Saturday 19th March at Eye Community Centre.

This is our second year at our new (larger) venue and once again everyone is welcome to join us for a great night out. At the very least you’ll help us raise money for local causes, but if you’re lucky you might even win a little bit of cash into the bargain!

General admission is £3 on the door and includes a light buffet of filled baguettes and crisps. A licensed bar will be available throughout the evening.

We are also looking for Race Sponsors (£30/race, which includes a ¾ page A5 advert in the program and admission for two people) and Horse Sponsors (£8/horse, includes admission for one person and a chance to win the winner’s prize).

For more information please contact Lion Dianne Parkin or Lion Bill Peacock or use our contact form.

On Sunday 22nd November, Farooq Mohammed (owner of Maharanis restaurant in Hampton) was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship in recognition of his support of charities in and around Peterborough.

The Melvin Jones Fellowship is named after Lions Clubs’ founder, and is the highest honour awarded by Lions International. It is presented only to those who reflect Lions’ commitment to humanitarian work and is not given lightly.

The award was made by Peterborough Lion Club President Bill Peacock and Club Secretary David Pope following a fundraising curry evening hosted by Farooq which raised well in excess of £600. Farooq has supported Peterborough Lions on many previous occasions and more than £10,000 has been raised as a result, contributing to a wide range of causes supported by the club. However the award also recognises the support given to other local charities.

Making the presentation club secretary David Pope said: “Farooq has demonstrated consistent, long-term support for the charitable sector and the wider community and we admire his personal commitment to improving the lives of those less fortunate. It is our way of showing that we appreciate his support and value him as an honorary member of our club, a position granted to him in 2014.”

“I am privileged to be able to play a small part in supporting not only Lions but many other charities who often struggle to raise funds especially in today’s difficult environment,” Farooq responded. “With the ongoing help of my staff and family I will do my best to live up to the expectations of Fellowship.”

Peterborough Lions Quiz 2015

Peterborough Lions Quiz 2015

Christmas is fast approaching, which can only mean one thing: 2015’s Peterborough Lions Quiz is here!

As usual you’ll be able to pick up a copy from one of several local shops and charities (if you’d like to support us by selling the quiz please get in touch), or directly from us in person at one of several locations throughout the city over the next couple of months – check out our diary for locations and dates. You can also buy them online (£1 postage charge applies no matter how many you buy, and we still have some from previous years available if you missed them).

This year the theme is “What’s My Line? (Careering around the world of work)”, so if you know your accountants from your bookkeepers you should have an advantage – but if you don’t, not to worry because as always the connection to the topic is pretty loose, and as usual it’s all a bit of fun. To get you started, try a sample question: “Mail male” (answer is 7 letters).

The price is unchanged from the last few years at £1.50, and you can win prizes of up to £100!

For those of us who have been around a while this might not come as a surprise, but can you believe that the Peterborough Lions Quiz has been going over 25 years?

Lion John Clarkson Memorial Race Night

race nightPeterborough Lions are excited to invite you to our 2015 Race Night, at 7:30pm on Saturday 20th June at Eye Community Centre.

Those who attended last year will recall that we were packed out so this year we’ve moved to our new venue in Eye. Everyone is welcome and is sure of a great night out, and if you’re lucky you might even win a little bit of cash into the bargain!

We are looking for Race Sponsors (£30/race, which include a 3/4 page A5 advert in the program and admission for two people) and Horse Sponsors (£8/horse, includes admission for one person and a chance to win the winner’s prize). General admission is £3 on the door and includes a light buffet. A licensed bar will be available throughout the evening.

This year’s Race Night is being run as a memorial to Lion John Clarkson who sadly passed away late last year. Lion John was a very active member of our club, a key organiser of main fundraisers like our annual Carol Float, and someone who would have been heavily involved in this Race Night were he still with us. It would be fantastic if we could make this our biggest and best Race Night ever!

For more information please contact Lion Bill Peacock or use our contact form.

Once again, a huge thank you to everyone who bought our 2014 quiz – another fantastic success and a credit to everyone who took part. Amongst the beneficiaries are 48 local charities and non-profit organisations who sold quiz leaflets on a 50:50 share basis.

We had 875 completed quiz sheets returned to us, 28 of which were 100% correct (up from 6 last year!). The results of the draw were:

1st Prize – D. Brewin, Spalding
2nd Prize – J Harrison, March
3rd Prize – B Stone, Crawley
4th Prize – J Bamford, Spalding
5th Prize – E Dickinson, Dereham
6th Prize – S Maplethorpe, Bretton
7th Prize – L Madden, Hemel Hempstead
8th Prize – J & G Harris, Longthorpe
9th Prize – D Blundell, Northampton
10th Prize – K Woods, Norwich

As always it’s great to see winners from outside Peterborough – thank you to everyone who returned entries and kept our markers busy!

If you didn’t return your quiz and want to mark your own, or (and this probably applies to most of us) just want to find the answers to the questions you couldn’t answer, the answers are available to download here: Peterborough Lions Quiz 2014 Answers (Adobe PDF format)

So that’s it for the 2014 quiz! Take the next six months off to relax and prepare yourself for the 2015 quiz, available from September.

All the members of Peterborough Lions Club would like to say a huge thank you to the people of Peterborough.

You very kindly made generous donations to our happy collectors at each of our Christmas Carol Float venues.

We managed to raise just over £3000 in total!

This money will go to help lots of varying causes throughout Peterborough and enable us to continue our support for groups and individuals alike.

Our main cause this year is Peterborough Association for The Blind.

We would also like to thank the people who came to help us from other worthy groups and charities.

The money raised is also a fitting tribute to John Clarkson who sadly died before Christmas and who had worked so hard on getting the Carol Float ready for another year.

Santa and his helpers will be out at various supermarkets during the build up to Christmas.

Members of Peterborough Lions will be busy helping out and would all love to see you.

Here are the dates and venues:

Quiz 2014 FrontSeptember is here, which can only mean one thing: 2014’s Peterborough Lions Quiz is here!

As usual you’ll be able to pick up a copy from one of several local shops and charities (if you’d like to support us by selling the quiz please get in touch), or directly from us in person at one of several locations throughout the city over the next couple of months – check out our diary for locations and dates. You can also buy them online (£1 postage charge applies no matter how many you buy, and we still have some of last year’s available if you missed it).

This year the theme is “Equine Antics (a saddlebag of horsey questions)”, so if you know your Shetland ponies from your shire horses you should have an advantage – but if you don’t, not to worry because the connection to horses is pretty loose, and as usual it’s all a bit of fun (horseplay?). The price is unchanged from the last couple of years at £1.50, and you can win prizes of up to £100!

For those of us who have been around a while this might not come as a surprise, but can you believe that the Peterborough Lions Quiz has been going for 25 years? That makes this our silver jubilee!

The quiz was devised by Peterborough Lions John & Sheila Cheetham, who both remain valuable club members all these years on and are now nominated together for a community award. If you love the quiz please take a look, and vote for Lions John & Sheila!

Eye Open Spaces Fun Day

Peterborough Lions were happy to be amongst several charities supporting the 5th annual Eye Open Spaces Fun Day, at Eye Community Centre, in – you guessed it by now – Eye. The Fun Day was opened by local MP Stuart Jackson, and it was nice to see a lot of people brave the rather damp weather forecast for what actually turned out to be a dry (if overcast) day.

Peterborough Lions had several members present, allowing us to run several fundraisers, including Feed The Lions, a bric-a-brac stall, selling the ever popular punch balls, and our favourite Lions Cage.

Peterborough Lions are pleased to have the proprietor of Maharanis Restaurant in Hampton, Farooq Mohammed, as our latest member.

2014-07-06 - IMG_3207 - Mr Farooq Honorary LionMr Farooq has been a supporter of Peterborough Lions for some time and has made substantial contributions to the club’s fundraising efforts, for causes as diverse as the club’s well used community minibus to the Haiyan Typhoon disaster.

As well as being a supporter of Peterborough Lions for over five years, Mr Farooq also does a lot of work in the community, for example providing the funding to allow a local school to offer breakfast for their pupils through the “Magic Breakfast” scheme.

It therefore gave several club members the perfect opportunity to visit Maharanis for a great meal and and for Lion President Erica Constable to present Mr Farooq with his membership certificate and pin.
