It’s been another great year for the Lions’ Quiz, thank you once again to everyone who took the time to complete and return the quiz to keep our markers busy!

Of-course the biggest thanks goes out to everyone who bought the quiz, whether or not you were able to return it. The funds raised from the quiz are incredibly important and will be put to fantastic uses. And also we mustn’t forget everyone who worked around the clubs’ volunteers to sell the quiz sheets, from a wide variety of shops and pubs to the charities and other organisations who sell them on a 50:50 basis to help raise funds for other great causes.

But you don’t care about any of that, you just want to know if you were a winner, right?

Here are the results of the 2015/16 Peterborough Lions Quiz, from the draw that took place at the club’s business meeting on Tuesday 9th February.

  • 1st Prize £100 – E O’Boyle – Peterborough
  • 2nd Prize £75 – L Porter – Tring
  • 3rd Prize £50 – J Missin – Stamford
  • 4th Prize £25 – J Heath – Peterborough
  • 5th Prize – £10 – P Way – Huntingdon

  • 8th Prize £10 – D Blundell  Moulton
  • 9th Prize £10 – J Vajda – Peterborough
  • 10th Prize £10 – M Rae – East Sussex

In total, 903 quiz sheets were returned, 26 were 100% correct.

If you won, then well done – your cheque is on its way! If you didn’t, well you’re in great company, and there’s always the 2016/17 quiz which will be out in September, and as always if you don’t want to miss out you’ll be able to buy them online!

Anyone who wants to check their answers and get the solutions they missed can download the answer sheet here: Peterborough Lions Quiz Answers 2015. Congratulations to anyone who found a perfectly valid answer to a question that the quiz compiler hadn’t thought of – you can find the range of answers accepted on the answer sheet. If you managed to find more than one answer to any of the questions then you did very well indeed!

On Sunday 22nd November, Farooq Mohammed (owner of Maharanis restaurant in Hampton) was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship in recognition of his support of charities in and around Peterborough.

The Melvin Jones Fellowship is named after Lions Clubs’ founder, and is the highest honour awarded by Lions International. It is presented only to those who reflect Lions’ commitment to humanitarian work and is not given lightly.

The award was made by Peterborough Lion Club President Bill Peacock and Club Secretary David Pope following a fundraising curry evening hosted by Farooq which raised well in excess of £600. Farooq has supported Peterborough Lions on many previous occasions and more than £10,000 has been raised as a result, contributing to a wide range of causes supported by the club. However the award also recognises the support given to other local charities.

Making the presentation club secretary David Pope said: “Farooq has demonstrated consistent, long-term support for the charitable sector and the wider community and we admire his personal commitment to improving the lives of those less fortunate. It is our way of showing that we appreciate his support and value him as an honorary member of our club, a position granted to him in 2014.”

“I am privileged to be able to play a small part in supporting not only Lions but many other charities who often struggle to raise funds especially in today’s difficult environment,” Farooq responded. “With the ongoing help of my staff and family I will do my best to live up to the expectations of Fellowship.”

At the November meeting Peterborough Lions welcomed new members Julie Burge & Peter Fowell, who were sponsored by Lions Anita and Richard Willis, themselves relatively new to the club. It is fantastic to see a growth in numbers and we look forward to putting the new recruits to good use serving the Peterborough Community!

In keeping with the theme of supporting the community, Lion President Bill Peacock was also incredibly proud to award Lion Robert Mapletoft with a certificate to mark his one hundredth blood donation – a fantastic achievement and hugely important to blood (and blood product) recipients.

Our very special guest, Lions District 105EA Governor Christ Crick travelled all the way from Beccles Lions Club to present long service awards to Lions Paul and Karen Browne (10 years), Lion Steve Jellis (20 years), Lions Anne and Trevor Franklin and Robert Mapletoft (15 years). In response Lion President Bill presented a £200 cheque for the District Governor’s Wife Evelyn’s appeal.

Peterborough Lion Bob Gascoyne travelled over from Spain (a little to the south west of Beccles!) to make a rare appearance at a meeting to give an emotional update on the really valuable work taking place at A.F.E.M.C.E.

Peterborough Lions welcomes its newest member

At the September club meeting, Peterborough Lions were proud to welcome Clowance Lawton to the club.

Having recently graduated from the University of Surrey, Lion Clowance now works for Warners Group Publications in Bourne where she has taken up the position of British and Irish Editor of the Lion Magazine, so we’re sure to be hearing much more from her. (She also has the role of Marketing Executive of Cake Craft & Decoration Magazine, maybe that means we’ll get cakes at future meetings?) Having first visited the Peterborough Lion Club for the July business meeting, Clowance was introduced to the club by Lion Gaby Sharman who subsequently acted as sponsor at the induction this month.

Peterborough Lions is always looking to recruit new and enthusiastic members and anyone tempted to follow Clowance’s lead is invited to contact us.

Lion Clowance says: “I am ready to get stuck in with the Peterborough Lions, selling quiz sheets and helping the local community. I also hope to help promote the Club at a local level with my PR and marketing skills.”

Watch this space!

Peterborough Lions, had the pleasure of welcoming the Mayor of the City of Peterborough, Councillor John Peach, as the newest member of the club.

Lion John introduced himself and talked about the wide range of charities he actively supports. The club has gained a valuable member and we look forward to involving him in as many club activities as his role as Mayor allow.

PAB are a fantastic, local charity who have been providing invaluable practical and emotional support to the blind and partially sighted in and around Peterborough for 100 years.

Peterborough Lions were delighted to welcome PAB to speak to us at our February business meeting. The range of services and support provided by PAB is extensive and would fill a website on their own, so it’s a good job they have one! www.mypab.org.uk

As a service organisation committed to supporting local charities we are proud to support PAB and look forward to continued involvement over the next 100 years.

Lion Ray Garrood

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Peterborough Lion Ray Garrood. A Lion since 1975, Lion Ray’s career with Nat West Bank gave him the opportunity to move around the country and to join his local Lions club and to take on roles such as District Treasurer. Soon after retirement he joined Peterborough Lions Club.

Lion Ray and his wife Shirley were a great asset to Peterborough Lions, always diligent when investigating our many requests for funding and always willing to do their stint at selling our Quiz Sheets and on the Christmas Carol Float.

Lion Rays wise counsel will be greatly missed, our love and wishes go out to Shirley.

Peterborough Lions Club will shortly be hosting the annual District Convention for Lions Clubs from East Anglia. The event will see around 300 Lions Club members and their partners from Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk gather at the Holiday Inn Peterborough West from 12-15 March.

The event will include social functions such as a partners visit to Burghley House for a guided tour, a themed party night, and a formal banquet and ball, as well as a full day convention on the Saturday which will be chaired by District Governor Kevin Rodgers from Wisbech Lions Club.

All the clubs in attendance are a part of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service club organisation. Founded in 1917, it has over 1.3 million members worldwide and is best known globally for its work in trying to prevent blindness and assist the visually impaired. Each club also volunteers and raises funds for local community projects and in recent years Peterborough Lions has supported Peterborough Association for the Blind, Special Care Baby Unit, and Music and The Deaf Youth Orchestra, as well as provision of a community minibus for local charity or welfare use.

New members are always welcome; for more information please contact 08458 339534 or refer to www.peterboroughlions.org.uk.

All the members of Peterborough Lions Club would like to say a huge thank you to the people of Peterborough.

You very kindly made generous donations to our happy collectors at each of our Christmas Carol Float venues.

We managed to raise just over £3000 in total!

This money will go to help lots of varying causes throughout Peterborough and enable us to continue our support for groups and individuals alike.

Our main cause this year is Peterborough Association for The Blind.

We would also like to thank the people who came to help us from other worthy groups and charities.

The money raised is also a fitting tribute to John Clarkson who sadly died before Christmas and who had worked so hard on getting the Carol Float ready for another year.

Lion John Clarkson

It is with great sadness that we report the death shortly before Christmas of Peterborough Lion John Clarkson. He leaves a wife (a fellow Lion), two daughters and three sons.

Lion John was a very active member of the club, and heavily involved in some of our most important fundraising events – including the Christmas Carol Float, making his death in the days leading up to the last weekend before Christmas all the more poignant.

The funeral will be held at 2:30pm on Wednesday 7th January at the Church of St. John The Baptist in Werrington. Family flowers only.
